Management Training Tips that Break the Mould, in Nine Simple Steps
I’m going to take you through my nine steps to help you break the mould, gain real clarity and communicate effectively.
Communicating with clarity will really help you interact with those in your business, in your team and other people in your business network. This is so important, as we all know, and gaining clarity about what good communication looks like will help.
Being a great leader and manager is about building trust within your team and with others around you.
Step 1: Have an Open-Door Policy
Be prepared to talk to people. This encourages engagement and positivity.
Step 2: Be Crystal Clear
Set expectations and be very clear about what those things are. Don’t allow any ambiguity to cloud the situation.
Step 3: Use the Same Language
If you’re in a sector that uses a lot of terminology, abbreviations or jargon, or if you’re in a technical industry, make sure your team understands the language. If they comprehend everything you’re saying, your message will be better received.
Step 4: Use Proactive Communication
Make sure you’re the one who goes to them, particularly if there’s a challenging situation at hand. Don’t wait for them to come to you. Really be clear about the message you need to impart.
Step 5: Keep Communication Positive
You’ll need to have some challenging, difficult conversations. But as a whole, keep it positive. If someone is doing a good job, tell them. Don’t be too frightened to say, “Well done!” That positive reinforcement is important.
Step 6: Become a Good Listener
Hear what the other person is saying, instead of assuming you know. Repeat back what you think they’re saying to you, in order to gain clarity.
Step 7: Smile
Be friendly and empathetic. This will go a long way and help you as a manager.
Step 8: Use People’s Names
Say their names out loud, because we all like to hear our names. This will aid your communication.
Step 9: Be Mindful of Body Language
It’s easy to get caught in the trap of folding our arms or avoiding eye contact. Open your body posture.

Management Training with Tracy-Anne Barker
Who am I? I am The Manager’s Mentor. I’ve worked in many different sectors, for more than 20 years. I broke the mould, and I’m going to talk about how you can do that, too. I’m also going to talk about not following the herd.
I've been in the supply chain sector for 18 years, and for the last 12, I’ve been mentoring, coaching and training managers just like you. What I’m doing now is building a global community of managers who are supported, energized, knowledgeable and skilled at leading their teams to maximise performance.
So what’s this all about? I’ve never followed the herd myself. I’ve always tried to break the mould. Management, management training, management coaching, management mentoring…are no different. And I hold the philosophy that it needs to be practical.
There are lots of theories and academic thinking out there about management, but for me, it’s about making it much more practical for you, as a business owner or manager within an organization.
The community I’m building is aimed at giving business owners, executives and entrepreneurs the ability to be skilled at leading their teams. I’m going to share ideas, hints and tips to support your confidence, knowledge and skills to help you maximise performance as a manager or business owner.
Because if you work for yourself or you’ve got a small business and you’re looking at growing your team by bringing people on for the first time, you might not be that familiar with managing people. Instead of making mistakes, you can learn hints, tips and tricks to help you manage people in your business.
Management Training to Remedy Self-Doubt and Imposter Syndrome
Traditionally, as a country and a culture, we do well with management training, except that we often wait until we have a problem before we think about coaching, mentoring or training. Taking proactive steps can help you as a manager.
I think many of us would agree that being a manager can be a lonely place. I’ve certainly experienced that over the years. It can lead to things like self-doubt and the imposter syndrome.
There are lots of great articles out there to help you; in fact, I’ve recently published one on my website, tabarkerassociates.co.uk, and across some social media channels, called 7 Tips to Help with The Imposter Syndrome.
The imposter syndrome and self-doubt can be really difficult for a manager to deal with. What we’re trying to do is help you gain new skills and increase your confidence…really help you with that level of self-doubt.
Our community also looks to share challenges and successes, so you’ve got that safe and supportive environment. I advocate for you to be the best version of the manager you want to be.
Why the Best Managers Don’t Follow the Herd
My reason for not following the herd is engrained in me as an individual, but from a management perspective, what I’ve learned is that we can be quite reactionary.
We don’t necessarily give managers training when they become managers. When you get that promotion, you’re often expected to know all the answers. We often don’t know those answers.
That’s why it’s really important to allow yourself to grow as a manager and gain those skills as you go through. Don’t get caught in that trap of reactive actions. Upskill yourself. Become much more proactive and preventative so you know what you need to do.
Help yourself grow, help yourself increase your role, help yourself expand as a person and increase your confidence. That’s really, really important.
So what do I mean by “reactionary?” For me, it’s very much about reacting to a situation, perhaps a negative thing happening in your organisation or with one member of your team.
Let’s take a performance issue, for instance. Perhaps you haven’t had to deal with this before and you don’t have the skills or know what to do. This member of staff is not performing and they’re causing you issues.
I’ve had to deal with this. I received a promotion, and what became clear very early is that a member of staff had not been performance-managed. I knew I needed to address this early on and quickly. I worked with the HR manager and went through the processes necessary for addressing those performance issues.
This had gone on for quite some time before I had arrived at that organisation. It had cost them a lot of money in terms of what needed to be done, but also in terms of the loss of business. Other staff issues had resulted regarding attendance and performance.
This caused a lot of problems. That manager was not addressing the issues, and neither had the previous manager, who didn’t have the skills, the knowledge or the ability to do anything about it. It had gone unchallenged.
I worked with the HR manager, and resolved the problems. Long term, the company was able to turn around what had happened and it was resolved. But they could have addressed it a lot earlier. They could have saved themselves money and a host of challenges.
I advocate for proactive action--skilling yourself so you know how to address and handle those types of challenges.
Have you experienced or witnessed people in a business (yours or someone else’s) with a performance issue that went unchallenged? Often, organisations will pass those people around, and when difficult people get moved, that can cause more issues and areas of concern.
If you’re a small business owner or manager and you’re looking to take on staff, it’s important that you think about this subject. When that first or second member starts, if there are performance issues and you don’t address them, it will directly hit your pocket. It’s going to directly affect your business.
That’s why I want to build a community of managers who feel supported. And that’s why I feel it’s important that managers have the tools, tips and tricks they’ll need to think in a proactive manner.

Management Coaching Visualisation, with Tracy-Anne Barker
The first step you can take as a manager is to visualise what you want to be within your organisation or business. So let’s do a visualisation exercise.
I want this to be a breaking-the-mould exercise for you. Perhaps you don’t do much visualisation in relation to management, but what I want you to do is focus to gain some clarity and confidence, to help you increase your knowledge.
Really think about what I talked about in Part 1…about being a more proactive manager, rather than reactionary. I think we all know that when you become reactionary, it increases your stress levels. It can also cause low self-confidence, conflict, and productivity and performance issues.
Start to think about improving your performance management skills. If you’re managing a business, or if it’s your own business, think about what you can do to move your management abilities forward and improve your skills.
Seat yourself comfortably and plant your feet on the ground. Read through these next few paragraphs and then close your eyes and envision what I’ve described.
First, take ten slow, deep breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth…or however you find breathing most comfortable. Slow down your thoughts from the day. In through your nose, out through your mouth.
We're going to visualise what you see as a manager. As we start this process, imagine that you’re confident. You’re an informed and knowledgeable manager.
You may have conflicts and challenges to deal with, but you have great confidence. You know how to deal with it the right way. You are enjoying your job. You’re supporting your team. You’re receiving really positive feedback.
Your targets and work are being achieved. The company and your team are performing well. You don’t dread going to work, and you don't get that negative Monday-morning feeling.
You are ready and prepared for challenging conversations. You can do this. You’re becoming the best manager--a manager you want to be.
Hold that image of what you’d like to be. Hold that image of positivity.
Begin another ten cycles of breaths. In through the nose, out through the mouth. Hold that thought of positivity, of confidence…of how you’d like to be.
Slowly open your eyes. Become accustomed to the light. Have a wriggle.
How do you feel? Were you able to visualise some positivity? Did that work for you?
Hold in that thought of positivity. Hold in that thought of the confidence you want to grow into. You want to increase your skills and confidence.
Using positive affirmations and visualisations can help us all to increase confidence in how we manage things, as we oversee our own confidence levels and next steps.
That’s one exercise you can use, and I encourage you to try your own visualisation, especially if you’re not feeling confident about any challenges ahead of you.

If Your Child is Being Bullied, Start Here
Children need to see things for themselves. This is not about what you say, it’s about what they hear. It’s not about what you point out to them, it’s what they see after you have pointed it out. This is about coaching rather than telling. It’s about questions. It’s about using questions to draw a child out of themselves. It’s about getting your child to see that it’s not their fault.
What’s going on inside the bully has determined that child’s behaviour. The bully is scared, angry, worried, having a tough time…and they’re taking that out on your child.
This is about helping your child understand human behaviour and how our feelings drive those behaviours. How our thoughts drive our feelings, and how our self-identity and view of ourselves drive our thoughts, which drive our feelings, which drive our behaviours.
This goes on inside all of us. Your child has to see that it isn’t their fault. They have to see the truth of that.
My Bullying Experience, Full Circle
Back to my story. If you haven’t read part two, How to Stop Cyberbullies and More, go there for the backstory—to read about what happened to me at scout camp.
A friend of a friend, Bob Kennedy, who lives near me, is a fan of what I do. He has a son who’s about seven or eight, and not long ago, he contacted me because he was concerned about his child.
The biggest cause of children’s unhappiness is bullying. This stuff is emotional. Building your child up to be bully-proof sets strength within them. Tech companies think cyber bullying is a tech problem, but it’s not. It’s an emotional problem, so it doesn’t matter how it’s delivered.
Bob was asking me about this, and I told him my scout story and about my patrol leader. Bob described the person, and told me he used to work with him in a kitchen. He said he was always a “nasty piece of work.”
That was the final piece of the jigsaw puzzle for me. Bob sharing that made me realise that it was never my fault. I kind of knew that, but it took that knowledge to a deeper level. That’s what the first stage of working with children is about. It’s helping them get to that deeper realisation.
When Your Child is being Bullied, Coaching is the Answer
We’re brought up to believe that knowledge is a yes or a no. I either know it or I don’t. In computer language, it’s either a one or a zero. Or it’s black or white; there are no shades of grey. But what we know isn’t like that. We can know something intellectually (in our heads), but that’s totally different to knowing something in our hearts and bones (embodied understanding).
I now knew that patrol leader was a troubled child himself, copying his dad. I was now sure he was doing to me what his dad had done to him. That’s became clearer and clearer, especially after Bob’s story. That’s how deep we have to take things for them to sink in.
That’s another way of looking at the depth of knowledge. It comes from within us, like with the girl who could return to dance class with a level of conviction and understanding; there were no two ways about it, she was going back to dance class.
How we get to that is through coaching our kids. I don’t mean with lots of technique, but through questions, stories and sharing our own vulnerabilities. That’s what’s worked for me.
As adults, we’re often afraid to share our vulnerabilities or what’s gone wrong in life, or how we feel. That’s the starting point. If you’re a parent, you’re leading your child. Leaders go first and leaders share. How much you share comes down to your preference.
I am not a parenting coach and I’m not going to tell you how to parent your child. That’s up to you, and it’s your business. My wife and I don’t have children for medical reasons, so I’m not going to tell you how to parent your kids. I want to guide you in how to figure out how to inspire kids to make their dreams come true, make them happy, make them confident and bully-proof.

My Bullies, by Simon Benn
Hello, I’m Simon Benn and today I’m going to talk about how to make your child bully proof. What do I mean by bully proof? What I mean is your child doesn’t get upset by other kids picking on them and bullying them. Whether that’s at school, in the playground, when teachers aren’t looking; or whether that’s by text message or cyberbullying.
The bully-proofing is not what I set out to do. I kind of stumbled across it, and that gave me such unbridled joy, because I was bullied pretty badly when I was a kid.
When I was really little I sucked my thumb, which caused an overbite. I got called “Bugsy,” “Bugs Bunny,” “Ratty,” “Rodent”…the damage wasn’t just what the kids said, it was how they said it. That kind of bullying went on for a long time in school. I didn’t tell my parents what was going on. They always said, “We just want you to be happy.” I wasn’t happy, and I felt that if I told them I would be letting them down. That’s why that little girl, the dancer, hadn’t told her parents. Victims feel like it’s our fault, because the bullies make it about us, we think there’s something wrong with us.
As adults we think we’re not good enough for our jobs, or good enough to be entrepreneurs or parents. Quite often, parents tell me their child is being bullied and they don’t know what to do. They haven’t been trained for this, and don’t know how to deal with it.
The name-calling paled in comparison when I think about what happened in scout camp when I was about eleven. I was new to this scout troupe. I didn’t go to the same school as all the other scouts. I didn’t live in the same part of town. I didn’t drink tea. There was a catalogue of things that made me different, and bullies pick on people who are different.
The main thing was I kept on messing up and making mistakes. I collected wood that wasn’t dry enough to burn, for example. Every time I messed up, which was a lot, the patrol leader in charge of my tent made me kneel on the wet grass and repeat, “I am a stupid worthless piece of…swear words.” It was awful.
I didn’t tell anybody. I never went back, though. That’s why hearing these stories from parents and from kids really rocks my world.
Cyberbullying is not a Technology Problem
Too many believe that to stop cyberbullies, you have to solve a technology problem. Not true. Cyberbullying is no different than any other kind of bullying. The delivery method might be different, but the problem is still an emotional one, not a technological one.
When I’m able to help a child, I find it humbling and inspiring. It has nothing to do with me but I’ve stumbled across something. I love working with parents. I have so much fun working with kids.
I never thought for a moment I’d enjoy working with parents – that idea didn’t cross my mind until someone contacted me from Egypt (I’m in North Yorkshire). She said, “I was talking to my husband about children’s happiness, and I’d like to learn more about it.” She wanted to learn more about it for her kids, but she also wanted to bring children’s happiness into schools.
I didn’t know if I really wanted to do it. I had so many things running through my head. The voice of doubt was in my head. But ultimately, I decided to give it a go.
I was so shocked by how much I loved doing it. Even on Skype and Zoom…the connections I made! A mum shared how much it had changed life for her and her kids. She thought it would just be about her kids, but she became more confident by improving her kids’ confidence. These parents are at their wits’ end. They don’t know what to do.
